We are delighted to announce that our research group has been granted the «MyFlood» project, a significant endeavor aimed at enhancing the assessment of risks associated with compound flooding events in the coastal zone. This project holds particular importance for Spain, given the high population concentration and substantial exposure along the Spanish coastline. By adopting a compounding-oriented approach, MyFlood will complement existing flood risk assessments, which predominantly consider these events as univariate, and contribute to a more comprehensive understanding of integrated flood risk.
The overarching objective of the MyFlood project is to advance the modeling of coastal compound flooding impact and risk, considering the interaction of multiple drivers such as precipitation, river discharge, and sea level (composed of tide, surge, and waves) with natural and human systems. It aims to provide climate and flooding information at two temporal scales: short-term predictions and long-term changes due to climate change, as well as at two spatial scales: regional and local, facilitating the development of risk reduction measures for both short-term forecasting and long-term planning.
MyFlood takes an intrinsically multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary approach, integrating disciplines such as oceanography, meteorology, hydraulics, statistics, engineering, and economy. The project’s methodology combines these fields to convert hazards into risks, incorporating socio-economic factors. The results obtained will be instrumental in assisting risk managers through an efficient Early Warning System (EWS) that supports management, planning, and engineering decisions.
