In episode 9 of the 10th season of the popular science programme Órbita Laika, they talked about the cycles of life and, among them, the urban water cycle was explained. For this, Ricardo Moure went to the CITEEC to see first-hand the singular facilities we have in the Hydraulics Laboratory with which Manuel Regueiro and Jose Anta explained how water is managed in towns and cities.
Manuel Regueiro showed a conceptual scale model of the water supply system of A Coruña, managed by EMALCSA, and how the water is then treated to prevent contaminants from reaching the seas and rivers. On the other hand, Jose Anta showed the BLOCK, which has the largest rainfall simulator in Europe and allows the study of urban runoff. He also showed the augmented reality platform TOPOSANDBOX, which allows to perceive the impact of floods in urban areas.
Manuel and Jose are researchers from the GEAMA at the School of Civil Engineering of the UDC with a lot of experience in the management of water resources in natural hydrographic basins and in the urban water system, with numerous national and international projects in the field of flood management, droughts, numerical modelling and hydraulic monitoring and water quality management using Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SUDS).
