Description
The main objective of this project is to increase the understanding of the numerical modelization of mixing processes in stratified water bodies. This objective will be particularised in the study of sewage spills dispersion in estuaries, considering stratification due to salinity and temperature gradients.
A numerical model will be developed and validated with field and laboratory data, and will be applied to a real study case. The numerical model will be based on an existing 3D non-hydrostatic free surface flow model, and will incorporate additional modules for the computation of water temperature, salinity, suspended sediments, and fecal coliform concentration. The application of the model to a real study case (Ría de Arousa estuary, Galicia) will make possible the validation of the numerical schemes and formulations included in the model, and will also permit us to further analyse mixing and dispersion processes in this kind of problems.
