Experimental facilities

The port and coasts laboratory of the CITEEC has facilities which can carry out the following tests:

  • Large scale structural tests on the effects of extreme waves
  • In-house study of the behaviour of dikes, docks and beaches
  • Tests on inlets, estuaries, large ports and coastal forms
The wave dock

General view of the wave dock

There is also a large canal and a dock with the capacity to generate real waves and currents in order to carry out reduced-scale model tests.

The hydrodynamic expermintation dock is 32 x 34m2 and has a depth of 1.10mm. It has a wave generation system that allows the complete control of the waves generated, and which does not affect the incidence of reflected waves produced by the elements or by the actions of the test itself.

The dock allows the study of regular and irregular waves and also permits tests on maritime structures, ports, coastal dynamics and the dispersion of contaminants.

The wave canal is 70m long x 3m high x 3m deep. It has a piston type generation system capable of creating a real wave height of 1m.

These facilities are complimented by a small wave canal of 20m x 60cm x 60cm. It also has a wave generation blade (regular and irregular) and a current generating system. It has been used for teaching purposes and basic research ( stratified flow, wave-breaking, dispersion of contaminants).

Wave height sensors, pressure sensors, ADCP profilers, ADV velocimeters and accelerometers are used to measure the hydrodynamic variables pruduced during the carrying out of tests.
